We are putting together a group of people interested in honing their life drawing and/or modeling skills.
MODELS:
We value diversity so all types of models are encouraged to join regardless of sex, gender, ethnicity, body type. Ideally we would have a good mix of different kinds of models as well as artists
Sundays: 11:00 AM-8:00 PM

Ideally we would like to have a sizable group or groups that meet regularly so that we can make it worthwhile for everyone involved.

If you are interested please let me know:
1. If you are a model, artist, or both
2. You schedule preferences

If you know other people that might be interested please pass this along to them. If you have any further questions please contact me at my email or tribe.

We began a documentary in Paris and Turkey last year, and now as it gets warmer in Turkey we are going to complete it. We have a US distributor, and everyone involved will share in profits. It could be quite profitable for you and a real life changer. We are in pre-production of three others...one on black jazz in Paris after WWII until now. We have a Turkish captain/crew/cook on our 70' Gulet, 6 double staterooms still available, all with their own head (toilet and shower). Qualifications? Simply to be able to get along with people. Age? Our producer is 60, our editor is 25. Age inmaterial if you are young in spirit. If you have video experience (HD MiniDV PAL and Final Cut Pro, writing) all the better, but we are doing this to perhaps expand the focus of our documentary which is based on the mystical aspects of Alexander the Great - Title: Force of Evidence. Creative people get free reign as long as they don't sink the ship or the project. We are interested to add some human interest...profound, provocative, funny...to the program, so film making experience in not a requirement. Come for a week or two months. Email me for details.

Hi- I'm new here and have a pricing question. Here's the situation: 4 years ago, I started a company with a girlfriend. We manufacture dog products, the most innovative item of the line being a series of collars, leads and dog tags with little buttons with epoxy-domed images set into the leather. I am the designer- every item in the line, plus the (admittedly unimpressive, I'm not a web designer) website and logo, is something I designed. Here's a link to the page on our website: http://luckypupdesigns.com/pictovision.html

There's another company, Winky & Dutch, that's been around for many years that uses similar domes in jewelry, so I didn't come up with this out of the blue- my partner & I liked their stuff and wanted to do something similar, but on leather goods and with different artwork. We actually approached them about doing a line for them, but they dragged their feet for six months, so we decided to go ahead and do it ourselves. But I spent eight months of my life researching suppliers and contractors, getting prototypes made, working with a metal caster to come up with a setting piece that could be attached to leather, research, development , art direction and creation of the images that went on each dome- some were public domain images that I modified or non-pd images that I changed quite a bit, one style was licensed from Shepard Fairey, and some were created by me from scratch. It was a lot of work, and the company was and remains the only job I've had during this period. There's no other company in the pet product world with the same sensibility, and everything you see in the line (including other types of collars, dog coats, tshirts) exists because I did gthe work to create it.

We've grown at an impressive rate, but like all small businesses, any money that has come in has been going to develop new product and place larger orders each time. My partner, who has been working other jobs as well this whole time, decided she was sick of working for free, despite claiming to have been fully aware that a new business typically takes 3-5 years to show a substantial profit- we're right on schedule. She wants to sell the company, and we've been discussing what the business is worth. (I'm not interested in running it myself, too big, so buying her out is not an option) My accountant told me that when a business is sold, the worth is made up of numerous components: the value of the company itself, the designs, logo, URL, inventory, equipment, etc. She feels the company is worth very little, but both my accountant and I believe she is seriously undervaluing it.

However, assuming I own the copyright for all the designs- gotta consult with a lawyer on this- even if the company itself is not worth much, I might be able to sell the designs, logo, and perhaps the URL (since I bought it under my own name, not the company's) separately.

So, my question for those of you out there who have freelance-designed for another company, what do you think this is worth? This is something that the buyer would be able to base their business on for many years to come.

www.adaptivepath.com/promo/tribesf

In this full-day workshop, Adaptive Path's Dan Saffer will cover the four approaches to Interaction Design: elements, principles, & attributes of good interaction design; design research techniques; documentation; multitasking, adaptation, hacking, & service design. Based on Saffer's book Designing for Interaction: Creating Smart Applications and Clever Devices this workshop will feature activities and seminars that take participants from the discipline's prehistoric roots to its future.

This workshop is for new designers and anyone interested in interaction design, as well as more experienced designers who want a deeper view of and new methods for practicing interaction design. After this workshop, you will be able to:
*Be aware of the history of interaction design
*Use the four approaches to interaction design to create products and services
*Interpret design research
*Better document interaction designs

Hey Kids-

This is the first low key announcement as many details are still up in the air.
Just want to do a sweep and see whos interested in whats coming up and than hammer out details over the next few weeks.
In question are the opening dates, from 1-3 months from today.

The space has a working title of "the complex"... because it is.
We are a series of small warehouse spaces connected by a large undeveloped dirt lot that I have been slowly absorbing over the past year.
I have recently assumed the sole lease on the "gem" property, a 4500sqft warehouse with tall ceilings in the main performance and work area.
We are located near 5th and Folsom with extremely easy access to everything and the east bay.

It has three movie theaters, a tiki bar, a wolf range gas stove, parking and shared work / performance area with 24' ceilings.
Connected to it are 8000sqf of small business and artists studios and 10,000sqft of undeveloped lot.
Current co-tenants are an office for our non-profit 510c3: Arena Interplay
Kiosk and digital signage business rental and service workshop: Friendlyway Inc
Myself, and I have a small performance/ rehearsal space upstairs connected to my room.
A Small graphics/effects studio, still in development, with blue screen.

A plan for the usage is creating a digital video production facility for projects and would like the tenants to participate in the growth of this or something completely different they have to bring to the table.
The potential tenant must be a DIY'er as the space is still somewhat raw (although I appreciate it that way) and we are responsible for any upkeep of the builiding. No help from the building owner.
There is NO LEGAL LIVE within the buildings, commercial LEASE only.
So no residential rights can be extended to this scenario, still the lease is fair as long as we pay the rent and dont cause any trouble for the building owner with other neighbors or the city. This is why its important for the potential tenant to have a business license, they're easy to get and I can help you if you dont allready. I'm assuming you catch my drift and we can discuss details in a one on one.

I am seeking two tenants for sizeable upstairs studios.
We each should be self sufficient but definately am looking to build a collaborative community out of this project.
The rents are $750-$800 each/month- + $50 for the first parking space, $75 for any additional parking.
+ Utiitlies which average around $75+ for gas/electric/garbage/internet
+ Business Insurance (about $250 year shared).
Deposit I have to pay is twice rent, we can negotiate a payment plan for the deposit but it should total $1500.
If building owner increases rent, than individual rent would be affected. SO far 3 years without increase.

If you cant pay your rent and cant deal with having occasional public activities and clients in the space than please dont apply.
As the leaseholder I am responsible for the actions of the tenants and have just completed taking over the lease to proactively solve these problems.
Full disclosure and communication being key for positive development.

I personally have a history with group art spaces dating from being a co-founder of cellspace in 96, an early developer of monkey fresh in 2002, Front Room Gallery in New York in 98 and the Farenheit in Kansas City in 2000.
The long term goal is to purchase a building that can support our activities and create a business plan based on our current model to achieve those ends.
I am a bay area native and am 36. Have a background and degree in film and video, and am currently the DOO for friendlyway inc and am in charge of the companies operations out of the warehouse. I am in league with several other developments like this one and plan to incorporate speakeasy cinema (the current venue title) as a supporting agent to help this type of growth.
I've priced the rooms to be affordable but you still have to have your shit together to make it work.
I am interested in starting this process today so I can find the best matches for our space and get them on board as soon as identified.

If you have a ton of storage needs you should consider an off site location or purchase a shipping container to put into our yard.

Please send queries or interests/ideas bad jokes to:
skot kuiper
skot@videoamp.org

thanks and feel free to distribute this to interested parties.

We practice what we like to call “cultural alchemy” – integrating branding, strategy, e-commerce, online marketing and experience design into inventive solutions with intrinsic creative value for our clients and their customers. Seso works with a network of creative professionals around the world that are fanatical about the creative process, new experimental approaches and most importantly an open atmosphere of free-flowing creativity.

Working in an open, doorless creative space on the second floor of a 1960s industrial space, Seso has assembled a unique, forward-looking business model comprised of cherry-picked creative tenants that compliment each other – an in-house collective of strategic partners. We currently have a slot open that we’d like to fill with a talented and multi-dimensional designer. We’re interested in a designer that shares our vision and wants to continue running his/her own independent freelance design business. If the relationship makes sense, we provide the business infrastructure, a network of strategic partners and steady flow of work, in addition to the designer’s current clientele. Infrastructure includes fully furnished creative office space with kitchenette, conference table and lounge area, and a desk with a new Macintosh G5 computer.

Seso is seeking a strategic design partner that is driven to push boundaries - a conceptual thinker obsessed with new ideas that fervently challenge convention. The ideal partner will have strong skills across web and print design with priority given to those with an eye for usability and information architecture.
The fact that they already had three layers of advertising was enough, but adding to that the brutal lack of proportion to that damn ad, with its overwhelming vertical, and big gapping white spaces on either side, making you scroll and scroll... whatever happened to actual banner ads that fit a page?

Hi all,

I just joined this tribe and thought I would post a little bit about my experience working on a multimedia sound environment. I have had a few opportunities to provide music for various environments and with some interesting combinations of media (usually synched to visuals of some kind), but by far the largest-scale and most-rewarding project I have had the pleasure of working on was Experience Music Project's Audio Immersion Tunnel.

The Audio Immersion Tunnel, or AIT for short, is a 48-speaker soundsystem inside of a circular tunnel. The speakers are placed on every surface: the walls, ceilings, even the floors beneath grates are all speakers. Each speaker plays an individual track, and all of the tracks loop about every minute and a half. To effectively advance the song, one has to physically move to a different location in the tunnel. It was conceptualized and divided into quadrants (I believe into 8 6-speaker quadrants) and you could mostly only hear the quadrant you were standing in, with a little bit of spillover from adjacent quadrants.

The idea was that you could stand in any one area and hear a certain portion of the song (say, the verse), but to progress the song you had to walk to the next quadrant, and it would shift into the next part of the song as you began to hear it more.

There were also a lot of audio effects developed utilizing interesting panning tricks such as spinning them around inside of a quadrant or between quadrants. You could give an interesting effect of sounds moving by "zipping" a sound through a few quadrants, or even in circles around all of the quadrants. In this way you could hear the sound approach and pass you by.

The physical portion of the AIT (the speakers, mixers and control unit) were all developed by Oscar-award-winner Allan Howarth.

I was brought in on the project by Michael Shrieve. I had been working as an engineer and assistant producer for Shrieve and he was hired by EMP to work on the AIT (sorry for all the acronyms...) -- anyway, he brought me in as his assistant and I quickly took over the position. At the time he brought me in (~6 months after they began the project) it was already complete and had been tested with about 4 or 5 different compositions, unsuccessfully. Some of these compositions were by Shrieve, and some were actually recorded by Andy Summers of the Police. In any case, it wasn't really working and things were sounding too busy, sounds were masking each other, and an overall clarity was lost.

My approach to the project was to make a simple, sparse downtempo electronic (think instrumental hiphop ala DJ Shadow) tune, which morphed into a double-time electronic breakbeat piece (ala Chem Bros). I had pretty much full creative control and I produced a song over 2 long days at Shrieve's studio, cutting it to 48 tracks plus extra tracks for multi-speaker and FX-panning purposes. I brought them to the warehouse/studio where they had the AIT and imported them into Allan's system. We spent the next week implementing the tracks - it took 2 full days before we even had a working, playable demo. By the end of it we had all 48 tracks properly placed and interacting nicely, with quite a few tasty panning tricks and sound FX.

The Audio Immersion Tunnel went on to tour as part of EMP's Electric Tour Bus, a sort-of travelling EMP-on-wheels that goes around fairgrounds. Apparently it was visited by over a million people, though I'm not sure if that's true. In any case I never got to see it again after I finished working on it, but I'll never forget what it was like. I wish I had video or photos to post! But, if you ever see EMP's Electric Bus roll into your area, check it out and let me know if the AIT is still in action!

But foam is very weak and I need something like surveyors tape (something very lightweight) that can be unwound in the foam that will burn and carry the flame the entire length of the foam snake (I’m afraid the wind will break up my foam into several sections and then the flame will not go the entire length. This needs to be able to burn if wetted by the soapy foam. I'm also on the lookout for cheap/free chemicals that can be added to the foam, which will produce bright colors when burned.
A little background: we'll be releasing a new feature very soon -- the ability for users to select from a library of stylesheets to apply to their own profiles. What we'd like to do is showcase the design skills of our users, by featuring user-created styles in our style library.

If you know your way around Photoshop, and are familiar with designing for CSS-driven pages, head over to the Profile Design Contest tribe, where you'll find more information about entering:

Send in your concepts by April 1st, 2005, and we'll pick the best ones to add to the style library. This is a great opportunity to get exposure if you're a designer, since every tribe.net user will see the style library page. If selected, your design will be credited with your name (which will be linked to your user profile). The top design will be awarded an iPod shuffle.
The scenario:

I have a Nokia 3650 phone on T-Mobile. The voicemail system is not integrated with the phone at all.

When a call comes to my phone and I don't take it, my phone logs it as a missed call and records the caller ID and date/time info. The caller is then routed to the voicemail system. Let's assume the caller leaves a voicemail. When they are done recording the voicemail, a text message is sent to my phone with the following info:

Call from: 123
You have 1 new voicemail

I imagine for technical reasons the voicemail system is not able to send the caller id info. It SURELY can send the date and time of the voicemail but it does not. Thanks a lot. Its like having a crappy secretary that tells you someone called but did not write down who or when they called.

The thing is, when that text message about the voicemail is received by my phone, it knows that it is VERY likely it was the last missed caller that left this message. There are scenarios that this would not be true, I understand.

So the question: Is is better for a digital device to give NO information because it is not 100% sure, or is it acceptable
for a device to guess? Some factors I could see influencing this:

1) How often is the system right? wrong?

In the example of my phone, lets say that 98% of the time it was right about who left the message. Is this acceptable? To me it is, but that is just me.

2) How critical is the info
If the information in critical, guessing is not an option. I think
we can all agree on that.

3) At what point would we not trust the device?
And if we decided the device was not reliable enough,
should we have an option to not trust it anymore and turn
off guessing?

Ideally my phone would be intergrated with the voicemail system, I agree. But often the real world has constraints on time and budget, and that is when tradeoffs must be made.

So where do you guys weigh in? I am curious to hear....

and was thinking about the role of the "File" menu in web-centric applications.

At issue is the fact web-centric applications do not revolve around manipulating Files, but instead deal with objects on the web such as URLs, Weblogs, Posts, etc.

Will it become acceptable to rename the "File" menu with web-centric terms when appropriate? For example, the app I mentioned above deals with opening and editing weblogs, so would it be acceptable to rename the "File" menu to "Weblogs", or would users just freak out?

Its funny, it seems like such a small issue but it really does get to the heart of the "web as an OS" debate. Should we force our UIs to maintain the file based metaphor, or are we ready for something new?

I will be opening a Digital Arts Gallery in North East England and I am seeking interested artists wanting to showcase their work in a gallery setting. I will be taking applications. Simply email me p_ixepusher@yahoo.co.uk with your URL or some zipped examples of your works.

Should you be selected, you will be part of a new wave of art showcasing. Selected artist will have the opportunity to display their works on a variety of projectors and monitors in the gallery. You will have your own space in other words. This is not a web gallery by any means. It is the first of its kind. An art gallery with the sole purpose of selling and showing off digital artists. No more is the need for a website not one but your friends can access. You will be displaying your art to interested Art Directors and the public alike.

Please not this is only for artists who produce work from their computers. I will not be accepting traditional art as this is not the purpose of the gallery.

"Remember ergonomics? It's become a lost science, as denigrated as astrology and apparently less useful. In part, I blame in-dash navigation systems and so-called automatic climate controls, which together have done to ergonomics what Arthur Andersen did to corporate accounting. Why do so many nav systems take precedence in the center stack, ousting vital secondary controls to regions more readily controlled by passengers? I use the radio and HVAC controls daily, hourly, minute by minute, yet rely on the GPS to guide me less than twice per month. (That's a lie. I've never used a GPS.) At what point did buyers come to equate vehicular value with electronic complexity?"

www.aspaceoftime.net
Diego Bonilla has finally released his experimental film, A SPACE OF TIME. Four years in the making, this non-linear and interactive film is an example of the newest cutting-edge technology in the hands of a bold new director.
A SPACE OF TIME tells the story of Pandora Hamilton, a student of advertising who wants to bring down the industry from the inside. Convinced that the viewing of millions of ads over the course of a lifetime is damaging to the human psyche, Pandora deals with advertising as the most wicked side-effect of American capitalism. In addition to this theme, A SPACE OF TIME deals with the exponential speeding-up of technology, the commercialization of love, and fanatical faith in science.
A SPACE OF TIME is a non-linear film that offers a different version of the movie each time it is experienced. An interactive version of the film allows viewers to select the sequence in which the scenes are viewed.
Please visit www.aspaceoftime.net to watch the movie's trailer, hear the soundtrack, and order your copy of the film.

About once a year, we get a project to design a music player... we're on number four, I think, right now. There's starting to be an explosion of music player interfaces out there right now - portable mp3 players, desktop and web-based music applications, mp3 jukeboxes in bars, even touchscreen listening stations in Barnes & Noble stores - as more and more, anything with a processor can be made to play digital music.

So out of curiosity here, what are some of the more notable players and interfaces people have seen lately? The iPod, iTunes, and the iTunes Music Store can probably go without saying, although they shouldn't be free from criticism...

Background Information:

I believe the time has come for a convergence in various
technologies and computational capabilities for large-scale
and detailed virtual models of real world locations for
delivery through networks or other media (cd, dvd). What
is lacking is merely the follow through of this idea.

What I propose to offer is a freely available, public domain
repository or maps and objects to jumpstart offerings in this
area which would benefit public and private industries in fields
such as gaming, movie CGI, urban planning, mapping/direction
systems, etc.

At the heart of the organization would likely be two complimentary
projects: the Visual Common Object Repository (vCOR) and the
Metropolitan Area Presentation (MAP). The vCOR is a hierarchical
database of everday things (fire hydrants, mail boxes, humans,
buildings, etc.) organized around logical taxonomies. The MAP
is a combination of elevation maps, street maps, building plans,
and elements from the vCOR, tied to geographic coordinates
and serves as the 3D world for engines that would use the maps.

There are many details to be ironed out, and you could be
involved on the ground floor of a very exciting development in
computers and a whole industry of products that bring virtual
experiences to life.

So:
I am proposing starting a not-for-profit tech company that creates freely available, distributable, and usable 3-dimensional maps of real geographic locations, beginning with San Francisco. Possible uses for these models are rapid prototyping for city planning, disaster planning, gaming, entertainment, 3d chat, etc.

Looking for unpaid volunteers (unless we can swing some good funding, but I wouldn't count on that) in any of these areas:

modellers - 3d graphic models, photographers
programmers - converting graphic formats, creating graphics engines?, automation of data acquisition
database admins - relational or hierarchical database(s)
system admins - linux/unix or windows
system architects - creating parallel computing cluster
web masters - site representation and maintenance
software/hardware consultants - evaluate, requisition software/hardware

marketing/soliciting - seeking funding, software, hardware donations from public, private industry
office management - inquiries, supplies, organizational assistance, secretarial
book keeping/tax/business mgr - paperwork, forms and taxes

or if you would like to donate supplies, software, hardware, or web space that would be greatly appreciated too.

if you are interested in helping or learning more, please email.

Anyone done this, have any thoughts on it?

I'm personally finding the ability to create and move in and out of tribes to be one of the best features, as I'm sure it's meant to be. The opportunity to have groups of people to talk with that aren't necessarily in your friends list yet - and to have a different group of peers for each one of your interests - is a compelling one, and the site's design makes this all pretty easy to do.

BTW, there's an improvements thread in the Tribe tribe, so any suggestions for new or improved features might be better posted there. I just wanted to give us all something to talk about in here.
